1. Vegan/Vegetarian Community & Others Up in
Arms
A few days ago, we reported on
the Thaxton
family, who are being attacked by DCFS and General
Shurtleff for abstaining from meat in their diet.
As if the death of their
youngest child Dan due to carbon monoxide poisoning (furnace
exhaust asphyxiation) was not horrific enough, DCFS pursued
termination of the Thaxton’s other son, Matthew. Their excuse:
Parental neglect through malnutrition, supposedly caused by
the child’s vegetarian diet.
Undeterred by overwhelming
evidence that the entire family became ill due to a faulty
furnace unit, DCFS and General Shurtleff are attempting to
terminate this family.
Vegan and diverse elements of
other activist communities are now incensed at this vicious
assault on their way of life. They recognize that if DCFS and
the State of Utah can get away with this attack on the Thaxton
family, no family is safe.
Accountability Utah has just
been informed that citizens from Democrat, Libertarian, and
Republican backgrounds have organized a walk-the-neighborhood
campaign to inform communities of DCFS abuses. Their
focus is largely on Democrat areas, but we are encouraging
them to target Republican officials as well.
Accused parents must be
convicted of real, substantive criminal abuse or neglect
by a jury of their peers prior to having their parental rights
terminated. In addition, many due process protections must be
restored for innocent families.
For more information on
these protections, read our alert, "Attack
on the Family," our "Top
Legislative Reforms"
(in .pdf format), and see the
Parental & Family Rights
section of our Issues & Alerts page.

2. TAKE ACTION! Share their Flier
with Your Community
It is prudent that these
activists be supported in their worthwhile endeavor.
Here are a couple ways to help them:
1. Download a
copy of the flier
they will be distributing, make copies and share them with
your family, friends, and neighbors. These activists have
urged Accountability Utah to make this flier available to you.
You can also
download the flier in Word97 format
and tailor it to your neighborhood and elected official
(see our
elected official contact information page for contact
information).
For example: To see a flier
personalized for Senator Dan Eastman's neighborhood,
In addition, we recommend that
you contact health food stores in your area. Allow them
the opportunity to post these fliers and alert their
vegetarian or meat-conscious patrons. The right for a parent
to care for the health of a child through conscientious diet
choices is in grave peril and we all need to fight.
Citizens can no longer tolerate dangerous,
constitutionally-ignorant officials and agencies.
2. Contact your legislator
(see our
elected official contact information page) and let them
know that this is not a foolish activist citizenry. Time is of
the essence and they must take immediate steps to restore
rights to innocent families or seek other employment.
For more information on the
family rights you do not currently have, read our "Top
Legislative Reforms" (in .pdf format), read our alert, "Attack
on the Family," and see the
Parental & Family Rights section of our Issues & Alerts
page.
If your legislator patronizes
you, acts ignorant, or is otherwise unwilling to take
immediate, substantive action, don't waste your time
threatening him. Instead, prepare yourself to file
against him at his re-election period.
See
which offices are up for re-election.
For motivation, see our
Legislative Performance Report and
Pink Slips. The filing
deadline is March 17, 2004.
3.
Read the
alert we posted on the Thaxton family and complete a
few of the additional action items listed there.
