Chris Cannon & Howard Stephenson Sponsor Coronation of New World "Messiah"!
(News for 6/16/04 - Update for 6/29/04)

Update for 6/28/04: Many of the links cited in this article were predictably pulled from their host Websites since our article was publicized.  See our update to this popular saga with alternative links and much more information.

Summary: In a bizarre ritual you will have to see to believe, Congressman Chris Cannon and state senator Howard Stephenson sponsor the coronation ceremony of the new world "Messiah," Reverend Sun Myung Moon. Former Congressman Howard Nielson was on hand to receive an award from "Savior" Moon, and a picture was shown of world terrorist Moammar Quadaffi apparently receiving an award as well.

1. Moon is Crowned the World's New "Messiah"

At a bizarre March 24, 2004 coronation event held in the Dirksen Senate Office Building of Washington DC, Reverend Sun Myung Moon, leader of the "Family Federation for World Peace and Unification," (also referred to as the "Unification Church" — followers are often referred to as "Moonies") publicly announced his supreme Messianic role. Said Moon at this coronation event:

"The time has come for you as well to open your hearts and receive the secrets that Heaven is disclosing in this age through me. In one sense, I am a human being living with a physical body like each of you. But in the context of Heaven's providence, I am God's ambassador, sent to earth with His full authority. I am sent to accomplish His command to save the world's six billion people, restoring them to Heaven with the original goodness in which they were created.

"The founders of five great religions and many other leaders in the spirit world, including even Communist leaders such as Marx and Lenin, who committed all manner of barbarity and murders on earth, and dictators such as Hitler and Stalin, have found strength in my teachings, mended their ways and been reborn as new persons. Emperors, kings and presidents who enjoyed opulence and power on earth, and even journalists who had worldwide fame, have now placed themselves at the forefront of the column of the true love revolution. Together they have sent to earth a resolution expressing their determination in the light of my teaching of the true family ideal. They have declared to all Heaven and Earth that Reverend Sun Myung Moon is none other than humanity's Savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent. This resolution has been announced on every corner of the globe."

New Update! See a movie in English of the crowning of the "King of Peace," Reverend Moon, along with a speech of "reconciliation" by Utah state senator and president of the Utah Taxpayers Association Howard Stephenson.
Also see a movie featuring "Savior" Moon, his wife, and briefly showing Stephenson.

This coronation event was hosted by the Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace (IIFWP), of which Moon is the founder. The IIFWP advances a one world religion meshed with a one world government.

2. Cannon & Stephenson Sponsors of Coronation Event

According to the Washington Times, which is part of the extensive Moon business empire, Congressman Chris Cannon attended the coronation and "assisted" at the event.

Cannon and state senator Howard Stephenson were among those listed as hosts of this event.
(Note: While the program is still available online, the host committee list has been curiously removed. See two additional news sources on this story: source 1 and source 2).

The Ambassadors for Peace, which heavily participated in the ceremony (and is also controlled by Moon), recently gave Congressman Cannon an award at their February 4, 2004 event.

Stephenson had a front row seat at the coronation event and even gave a speech (go down 3 rows to see his pictures — he is also visible in the background of the 4th row, right picture; see additional pictures). According to a stunned eyewitness of the event who approached Accountability Utah with this story (and who wishes to remain anonymous), Stephenson also presented a song he and Senator Orrin Hatch had composed for world peace.

Stephenson has long been an admirer of "Savior" Moon. He had the following to say in 2001:

Utah state Sen. Howard Stephenson, R-Draper, said he had attended a leadership meeting in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the Unification Church. "It was like [LDS] General Conference for politicians," said Stephensen in his introduction of Moon. "It inspired us. "Stephensen said that although Moon is not a member of the LDS Church, he is "a true latter-day saint."

He then quoted the LDS Church's 13th article of faith, which says that members seek "anything virtuous, lovely, or ... praiseworthy" and said that Moon wants the same things.
Source: "Unification's Moon Offers Social Message: 'Time for America to awaken,' he tells SLC crowd Sunday," Peggy Fletcher, Salt Lake Tribune, March 11, 2001.

This same article also points out that followers of Moon believe that he is the "third Adam." In fact, Moon has long claimed to be the new Messiah. See, for example, a speech he gave on January 10, 1993, "Proclamation of the Messiah."

3. What Do Former Congressman Howard Nielson, a Neo-Nazi, & Moammar Qadaffi Have in Common?

Former Utah Congressman Howard Nielson was also present and received an "Ambassador for Peace" award (go down 6 rows to see his pictures; see additional pictures — he is the fourth person from the left).

Controversial characters have been selected for the Ambassadors for Peace awards. For instance, in 2001 an award was given to William Baker, whose writings, speeches, and former chairmanship of the Populist Party appear consistent with that of a white supremacist. See news article 1 and news article 2.

But wait… there's more. Also featured at the coronation ceremony was a picture of world terrorist Moammar Quadaffi, who also appears to have been given an award of some type. See additional pictures.

4. Conclusion: We Hear California's Borders Are Open

And why would Moon and his affiliates choose to recognize elected officials like Chris Cannon and Howard Stephenson? Perhaps because both share Moon's vision of destroying nationality by weakening America's borders and nationality — or, as Moons IIFWP puts it, "going beyond sectarian or national self-interests". Cannon has proposed legislation to grant amnesty to illegal aliens and Stephenson championed HB 144 in 2002 (see our "Got Milked?" publication in .pdf format) to grant permanent resident tuition status to illegal aliens. The objective appears to reduce Utah to a California-like quagmire of conflicting, powerless cultures. As Moon puts it in "God's Fatherland and the Peace Kingdom":

"The world that we desire is a place where no barriers or borderlines are seen. It is a world of freedom and peace. All people long for that kind of original fatherland. It is the fatherland that for thousands of years God has sought to establish. Likewise, it is the fatherland that humankind has longed for throughout history. Of course, when we talk about a "fatherland" it may denote a particular nation, but the original fatherland cannot be compared to any nation of the today's secular world.

"To establish a nation there needs to be sovereignty, people and territory. When we look at history we can see the rise and fall of nations, the countless transitions of sovereignties and a great many lives sacrificed in the process. All these martyrs died in the hope that the original fatherland would someday appear. But that does not mean that the United States, or Korea, or any other nation can become the fatherland which these people have longed for. It would be a place where there is neither democracy nor communism. Such a fatherland would have no need for any religion. It is a world that does not commit the folly of trying to measure the value of a person by the color of his skin. It is a place that does not allow any form of boundary or national border, including the barriers that divide the mind and body within each individual, bringing pain to them all."

Regardless of the motivations, these disturbing images, speeches, and actions of grown men and women behaving in such an absurd and unreal fashion — crowning a self-proclaimed Christ for the world — cause us to question the mental stability of those who participated.

After recovering from the stupor that this information naturally evokes, citizens might consider calling the Utahns who attended this freak show to request that the next time they choose to sponsor or attend something like this, at least do us the favor of claiming California as their place of residence.
